Look What I Can Do With My Hair

I can get my hair into a ponytail!

Last night, I was playing in my twists with different hairstyles. Then, I thought to myself, I wonder if I can get my hair into a ponytail. So, I pulled out my elastic band and proceeded to try.

Now, I must admit that this is not a perfect ponytail. There were pieces in the back that could not fit into it. And I also tucked the pieces at the side into the other twists. However, this sorta ponytail was not something I could have achieved 6 months ago. So, I am pretty pleased nonetheless=)

Weekend Hair Plans

So...this weekend I have nothing planned for my hair. I plan on keeping this set of twists in my hair for 2 weeks and I just finished week 1. I don't even think I am going to re-curl my hair on the sponge rollers because I am really feeling the twist updos. Of course I will stick to my regimen of oiling my hair and scalp but, that's about it. I love the low maintenance of protective styles:-)

So my plans for the weekend are:
1. Chill, relax, and enjoy it!

Hair Today: Twist Updo

Hey, yall. So, today I am wearing my hair in a twist updo. For some reason, I am really feeling elegant today. This updo is slightly different from my usual updo because the back is twisted into one flat twist.

I did do a YouTube video on my usual Twist updo that can be checked out HERE.

Have a great and blessed weekend everyone!!

A Staple Product: Giovanni Smooth As Silk Deep Moisture Conditioner

You already know that I am a big fan of the Giovanni product line. I did a previous review for the leave-in conditioner HERE. And I did another review on the shampoo HERE. So, now I am moving on the Giovanni Deep Moisture conditioner.

I adore this conditioner. I always use it in conjunction with the entire Giovanni line. Meaning, if I am shampooing with the Giovanni then I will be conditioning with the Giovanni. This conditioner has a creamy consistency and is great for detangling. However, since this is one of my most expensive conditioners I usually mainly deep condition with this only.

Pros:
1. Great consistency.
2. No overpowering scent.
3. Provides great moisture to the hair.
4. Great for detangling.
5. Gives great sheen to the hair.
6. Decreases the amount of frizz.

Cons:
1. Other conditioners can provide these same results. So, there is not a need to purchase this particular brand.

Ingredients: Aqua (Purified Water) With *Rosemarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, *Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Valencia Orange) Extract, (Mangifera Indica (Mango) Extract, *Cymbopogon Schoenanthus (Lemongrass) Extract, *Ginkgo Biloba Extract, *Echinacea Angustifolia Extract, *Salix Alba (Willow Bark), *Macrocystis Pyrifera (Sea Kelp) Extract, *Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Leaf Extract, *Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Extract, *Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Extract, *Glycine Soja (Soybean) Extract, Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Cocamide Mea, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Chloride, Acrylates Copolymer, Glycol Distearate, Amodimethicone, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysulfaine, Decyl Glucoside, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disteareth-75 Ipdi,C11-15 Pareth-7, Citric Acid, C12-16 Pareth-9,Glycerin, Trideceth-12, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance With Essential Oils. *Certified Organic By Guaranteed Certification Services.

I am a loyal consumer of Giovanni and I will be purchasing this product again. When I go to Target, I just pick up all three of my main products from this line--and the conditioner is apart of it. Now, I do plan on trying some of their other products from this line. So, stay tuned for that...

I Finally Did It!!

So, I have had an interest in doing a YouTube video for quite some time. I must admit that it was not that simple for me. I worked on this video and uploading it for five hours yesterday! Therefore, I am very HAPPY that this video is finally up.

I did the video on the Curly Twist Updo.

I must admit that I did experience moments of frustration with trying to figure the system out. But, maybe as I continue to YouTube the process will become simpler. I enjoy blogging more. The process is so much quicker. But, I can understand that sometimes a visual is needed in order to understand how a hairstyle works.

Also, I feel I look very weird on camera. I felt tense and not like myself. And I was hoping my voice was projecting. I could go on and on. Yet, despite all of this I am still ECSTATIC that this video is finally up.

Please check out my first YouTube video HERE. Thanks.

The style I YouTubed about was the Curly Twist Updo. Pics Below:

Tried Something New: Honey Deep Conditioner

So, last week I told yall that I purchased some honey. My sister, Auset, did a couple of posts on the benefits of honey so, I really wanted to try it on my hair. I did not know exactly how I was going to use the honey when I bought it but, I knew that I was going to use it in some method. Therefore, I went back to my sister's blog and then started checking out her posts on honey. I was delighted to find that she did a post that linked me to CurlyNikki's site. On CurlyNikki she provided a recipe for a honey deep conditioner. It sounded pretty simple to make so, I implemented it. All the recipe calls for is EVOO, honey, and optional conditioner.

Check out the recipe HERE.

Changes I made:
Now the recipe only called for 1 tablespoon for each ingredient. But, I increased the amount to 1/8 of a cup. I just don't think a tablespoon is enough for my thick mane. Also, the recipe said that you may add your fave conditioner (optional). So, I added my HE Hello Hydration. Another change I made was I did not put a hot towel over my hair once it was applied. I added a plastic shower cap and then wrapped my towel over the cap. I kept the mixture in for about 35 minutes. It was suggested to leave in for about 30 minutes but, I started chopping some vegetables and the time flew away.

My experience:
1. First off, I put the mixture in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Maybe this was too long because that oil was so HOT! I tested it with my finger (which I suggest you do, if you plan on trying this) and it felt like it was going to burn my finger off. So, I kept checking back periodically and it stayed hot. So, not to waste time, I just added a little bit more conditioner to the mixture so, that it may cool it off some. This worked.
2. I applied the mixture section by section in my hair. Then, I distributed the remaining amount over my entire head.
3. After I took off the plastic cap my hair looked shinier and supple. (Sorry, I forgot to take pictures. Next time I will).
4. Also, after I mixed the EVOO and honey I had to take a taste. I mean I love EVOO and honey so, I was curious:-) It was good. I suggest you not taste it after the conditioner is added.
5. The smell of this mixture was simply divine. I mean, honey and coconut is a great combination. The sweet smell was in the air and my hair.
6. I will definitely be using this deep conditioner again.

Comparison Pics

Ok, so when my 6 month Natural Anniversary hit I wasn't prepared. I did not have any comparison pics so that yall may gauge the amount of growth I have experienced in 6 months.

However, when I took my twists out this past Saturday and detangled it somewhat with my fingers I noticed that I had an afro. So, I rushed to take a picture of my hair so that I may provide comparison pics.

Once I saw these pics side by side I finally saw the significant growth of my hair. The first pic is my hair now (this was taken this past Saturday). The second pic is the night of my BC.

Oh yeah, I was really feeling the un-picked afro so, I wore it to church the next day. But, I did pull it back from my face just a little.

Featured on Naturally Obsessed!!!!

OMG!! I am finally featured on Naturally Obsessed. If you follow this blog you know I am a big fan of Naturally Obsessed blog. So, imagine my delight when my sister called me last night right before I was going to bed and told me I was featured. Can you say ecstatic?

So, check out my natural story HERE.

Oh, the random things people say...

"I just love your hair! Who does it?," asked my co-worker.

"Oh, I do my hair. I do all of my styles," I responded.

"Well, you have that type of hair. Under these braids my hair is just too much!"

I chuckle politely.

"They don't even want to braid my hair when they see it," she goes on.

"So, you have really thick hair. That's good."

"No, its not thick. It's something else. Its just big and crazy and tangled and ugh."

Sounds like the typical characteristics of thick hair, I think.

"See, you have trained your hair," she says.

"Hmmm?"

"Yeah, your hair is trained. You got it to be like that. My hair refuses to train."

I chuckle politely. "Well, alright. Talk to you later."

Weekend Hair Plans

Okey doke. It's that time again. What do I plan on doing with my hair this weekend???

Here goes:
1. On Sunday, I plan on taking out the twists that are currently in my head. Sunday will be 2 weeks that they were in.
2. I plan on shampooing, conditioning, detangling, etc.
3. I also plan on applying a honey mixture for my deep condition.
4. Next, I plan on putting a new set of twists into my hair.
5. I will then set the ends of the twists on sponge rollers.
6. That Monday morning, I will rock a fresh curly twist updo.

Sounds simple enough.

Naturals in Advertisement: Roca Wear

So, this is definitely a wig that the beautiful Naomi Campbell is rocking in these ads. However, I like that they went for the natural look with the ad in the upper right hand corner. I have noticed that a lot of companies will put a natural wig on a model to depict the natural look.

I mean, I would like it better if they employed natural haired models but, I can still appreciate them showing the beauty of natural hair. When I look at this ad I think Naomi Campbell looks gorgeous with the natural hair compared to the others. This shows me that she would look even more beautiful with her natural hair. However, I may just be bias to natural hair.

Great Linkage: Goapele Makes Art with Her Braids

I have always thought Goapele was GORGEOUS. She has been a natural queen since she first came out. The locs were beautiful, her TWA was on point, and her braid styles are unique. I thought it was wonderful that she show a video of her getting her hair done.

First off, I did not know here natural hair was that long! The braid design she wears usually involves wrapping her hair with yarn and then pinning it up. (The video shows more detail). Secondly, it takes time to put in those braids--they're so tiny! And the designs are unique.

I could go on and on so, just check out the video by clicking HERE.

Honey...

This past weekend I bought a big thing of honey. I can't wait to try it and reap the many benefits of this product.

My nieces were with me when I bought it--ages 8 and 6. And they asked "Auntee, what are you going to do with that honey?" I replied "I'm going to use it on my hair." They both got this baffled look on their expression. Then the oldest said very loud "Why would you use honey on your hair?!?!" I replied, "Because its good for your hair." Then the youngest said "But, won't it be sticky Auntee?" I replied "Not the way I'm going to use it." They still looked baffled and then they told their mom later, "Auntee is going to use that honey on her hair!" She replied, "Stop telling all her hair secrets in this store." And that was the end of that conversation.

More to come on the benefits of honey and how it worked on my hair later...

Hairstyle: Curly Twist Updo

Since I have committed myself to wearing this set of twists in my hair for 2 weeks I knew that I would play around with different ways to wear it. In a previous post I showed 2 ways I wore the twists: (1)side swept and (2)an updo. I stated in that post that I had curled my twists but, I wasn't really feeling the look. But, those curls came in handy! On the 3rd day, I did an updo and kept some of the curls out along with a bang. On the 4th day, I wore it the same way because I loved it so much. On the 5th day, I still wore it the same way. Finally on the 6th, 7th, and 8th day I tried something new with the curly twist updo. I simply pinned back the bang and let more of the curls show.

This will definitely be my go-to style for the colder months. And I received so many compliments at work on this style! It is a really easy 'do.

Day 3 - First day of curly twist updo. Day 3 - First day of curly twist updo (side view). Day 4 - Second day of curly twist updo. Day 5 - Third day of curly twist updo. Day 8 (today) - Sixth day of curly twist updo (side view). I pinned back the bang and let more of the curls out. Day 8 (today) - Sixth day of curly twist updo. I pinned back the bang and let more of the curls out.

Here's what I did:
(for the initial twists)
1. I dry twisted my hair with Jamaican Mango and Lime
2. I oiled my scalp with essential oils.
3. I oiled my hair with EVOO.
4. I sealed my ends with shea butter/EVOO mixture.
(for the curly twist hairstyle)
5. I wet the ends of my hair with water.
6. I then applied a dab of the Fantasia IC Olive Gel to the ends.
7. I set the hair on a sponge roller.
8. I left the rollers in overnight and took them out the next morning.
9. I then started to pin the hair with bobby pins in the direction that I wanted it to fall and I left a bang out (this usually takes about 10-15 minutes).
(to maintain the style)
10. I take the bobby pins out at night and sleep with a satin bonnet. (I do not re-curl my hair, the curls will hold).
11. The next morning I simply take the bonnet off and repeat step 9. To change it up a bit I pinned the bang back on some days.
12. Every other night I oil my hair with EVOO, seal my ends with my shea butter/EVOO mixture, and oil my scalp with essential oils.

Bonus pics: This is the night I set my hair on sponge rollers. I believe this was Day 1 of the twists.
This is the result of the curls, which I didn't like. So I pinned it up into a twist updo. But, I am glad that I curled the twists because they made my curly twist updo look fab.

Appreciating Hair At Every Stage

I walk into the lobby area while at work and spot a beautiful natural girl with the most glorious hair. And I find myself thinking "Oh how I wish..."

I've noticed something about myself. I am guilty of looking at other naturals hair and thinking with longing "Oh I can't wait until my hair gets to that point." Then other naturals will come up to me and say "Oh I can't wait until my hair gets to that length." It's funny that we are looking at the next natural wishing and that natural is looking at the next natural wishing.

Then, I realized I need to appreciate my hair at every stage.

At every stage of my natural journey I have tried a significant number of hairstyles. And as my hair grows those hairstyles will change over time.

For instance, my pinned-up braid outs no longer look the way they did when I first became natural. Also, I am currently wearing this cute curly twist updo (post on this style to come later) and I know that as my hair grows its not going to look the same and I may have to tweak it a bit. For example, just the other day on Facebook BeautifulBrwnBabyDol was doing a hairstyle that she tried on her hair a year ago. She even said "I think the style looked cuter on the shorter hair."

I say all this because I realized that I am growing to appreciate my hair at every stage. Yes, I am still inspired by other naturals who are further along in their journey. Yet, I am also inspired by naturals who just started their journey.

So, in the future when I see a natural with a gorgeous head of hair--like I saw at work yesterday--I will just appreciate the beauty of her hair while also recognizing the beauty of my hair.

Great Linkage: Changing It Up for Old Man Winter

So, I have talked previously about the importance of protective styling especially in the colder months. While on Naturally Obsessed I saw that she re-posted a previous article that also stressed the importance of protective styling and regimen changes in the winter. She offered some great advice and insight.

So check out the article HERE.

Beautiful Natural Men: Don Cheadle

Okay, so I know that Don Cheadle mainly wears his hair closely cropped. However, there have been times that he wore a textured mid-sized afro. (He wore a small afro in the Oceans movies.) Also, I just think he's beautiful and had to feature him as a beautiful natural man.

My favorite feature of Don Cheadle is his smile. It is so attractive and inviting. Therefore, he deserves to be a beautiful natural man.

Check out some of the great movies with Don Cheadle:
Hotel Rwanda
Iron Man 2 (I have not seen this yet, but its just a matter of time.)
Oceans Eleven
Oceans Twelve

Hairstyle: Twists

So, this past Sunday I twisted my hair up. I wanted to wear the twists just hanging but, I wasn't really feeling the look. So, on Monday I pinned one side of the twists over and wore them side swept. I had plans to curl the ends and wear it like that on Tuesday but, again I wasn't feeling the look. So, I went to my trusty twist updo.

I am going to try to keep these twists in for 2 weeks. That is a long time for me! But, that is the point of protective styles--not to manipulate the hair.

Below are the twos styles I have worn so far:

This is the side-swept twists.
This is the twist-updo. (I forgot to take of my glasses in the second shot).

Here's what I did:
1. I dry twisted the hair using Jamaican Mango & Lime Locking Gel
2. I oiled my scalp with essential oils.
3. I oiled my hair with EVOO.

A Staple Product: Giovanni Smooth As Silk Deep Moisture Shampoo

I have already reviewed the Giovanni Deep Moisture Leave-in so now it is time to move on to the shampoo.

I have been a faithful user of this shampoo since I first became natural. I heard many great things about it on numerous blogs so, I knew I would definitely be using that shampoo. Currently, this is my only shampoo. I do love what it does for my hair. I do want to try other shampoos in the future but, I am pleased with my current shampoo. So, why mess up a good thing?

Pros:
1. Has no bad ingredients--no sulfate.
2. Does not leave hair feeling stripped and/or dry.
3. Does what it says--provides deep moisture.
4. Does not give too much lather. It just lightly suds up.
5. I only have to lather once (no repeat) to achieve great results.
6. Price is not ridiculous for such a great product.
7. Does not have an overpowering scent.
8. Can be found at Target, Ulta, etc. so, there is no need to order it.
9. No animal products and cruelty free. Vegan.

Cons:
Honestly, I can't think of one con for this product.

Ingredients: Aqua ((purified water)), Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Valencia Orange) Extract (*), Mangifera Indica (Mango) Extract (*), Cymbopogon Schoeanthus (Lemongrass) Extract (*), Ginkgo Biloba Extract (*), Echinacea Angustifolia (Coneflower) Extract (*), Salix Alba (Willow Bark) (*), Marcocystis Pyrifera (Sea Kelp) Extract (*), Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Leaf Extract (*), Lavendula Angustifolia (Lavender) Extract (*), Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract (*), Glycine Soja (Soybean) Extract (*), Sodium C14 16 Olefin Sulfonate, Cocamide MEA, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Chloride, Acrylates Copolymer, Glycol Distearate, Amodimethicone, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Decyl Glucoside, Ethylhexyglycerin, Disteareth 75 IPDI, C11 15 Pareth 7, Citric Acid, C12 16 Pareth 9, Glycerin, Trideceth 12, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance with Essential Oils

This is definitely my go-to shampoo. Even if I try other shampoos in the future, I will definitely still purchase this product. It is a must have, in my opinion, in my household.

Next up, the Giovanni Deep Moisture conditioner...

Guess What???

Guess what, yall???

I have been natural for six months (and 2 days). My natural anniversary is on April 5, 2010. And Tuesday was October 5, 2010.

Time sure does fly when you're having fun!! I actually forgot that my six month mark passed until my sister mentioned on her facebook that she was celebrating her five month mark.

Unfortunately I don't have any length shots. But, I do have a picture of when I first BC'd and my hair now.

This is my hair the night of my BC, April 5, 2010. This is my hair last night, October 6, 2010.

Great Linkage: Prevent Hair Breakage

As I have mentioned before, the Natural Haven is a wonderful site with vast knowledge on natural hair. She comes from a scientific standpoint and it really helps. So, I was just reading an article on why our hair breaks and I have found out some new things that have enlightened me. For instance, I did not know that the hair is weaker when it is wet versus when it is dry.

She also gave a few other suggestions. So, if you are trying to prevent breakage and obtain length this would be a great article.

Check it out HERE.

Hair Today: Side Swept Twist Out Front

Ok yall, I just had to post a "Hair Today" segment. Last nights as I was oiling my hair and sealing my ends I played around with a few hairstyles I could wear with my hair like this.

I was thinking that having the hair side-swept would be cute but, I didn't think that it would stay down (my hair loves to rise). So, I bobby pinned it down to see how it would look and it was cute. But, I knew that I didn't want to have to do that for work. So, I had plans to just pin it all up in the front and rock some sort of updo.

Yet, this morning after I took off my satin bonnet. I first pinned one side. And as I was about to pin the other side I realized that my hair looked cute and was laying down. So, I left it like that and wore it to work today.

My hair is still in french braids in the back.

Natural Inspiration: Leela James

Simply put, she has some gorgeous hair. I have always been amazed by the amount of hair on her head. I just could not fathom anyone having that much hair. Now, I do believe that she does add extensions to her hair for volume because when she was interviewed on CurlyNikki she kept it vague on that question. She responded a "girl's gotta keep some secrets". Check out the article HERE.

Nonetheless, her hair is beautiful and I do believe she is natural. Also, she is a gorgeous woman. Her hair is an inspiration to me. One of my hair goals is to obtain length. So, her hair is a great motivation to continue to take care of my hair and one day it may be this big.

Is the natural community sadity???

Ok, I'm tripping. I just posted this by mistake on my fashion blog. I need to get it together.

So, I was on the wonderful CurlyNikki yesterday and she had a post that talked about "Natural Hair Snobbery". In this post was a letter from a reader of CurlyNikki who has a texlax (That's what she called it. I'm assuming its a texturizer). She felt that in the natural community we simply embrace naturals and act snobbish toward those who are not natural.

Here are a few points of her letter:
1. Stop saying your natural is your 'God given anything' because you still conform yourself in other ways (i.e. makeup, nail polish, deodorant)
2. She doesn't agree with the term natural and uses it in quotations because we are not 100% natural.
3. She has been natural several times before.
4. She feels the site condemns women who are not natural.

I could go on and on about some of her other points but, check out the article HERE.

Ok, when I read this yesterday I was about to be off work so, I did not have time to comment on CurlyNikki. Then, I realized my comment may become an essay so, I decided to post my thoughts on my blog.

First off, CurlyNikki is a wonderful site (which the reader did state). This is the first site I found when I decided to go natural and it has supported many current naturals on their journey with vast knowledge, experiences from other naturals, and so much more. I am an avid reader of Curly Nikki and I have never felt that the site condemned or put down women who are not natural. She also felt the site supported only curly textured women. However, the site is called CurlyNikki and it is a natural hair site. If she would like support for relaxed hair there are sites that cater to this. She should check out Hairlicious. (I used to be a reader of this site and its pretty good.) Or she could provide a site for support for relaxed/texlaxed hair.

Secondly, I am one of those naturals who give thanks to God for being natural. It takes a lot to look at yourself and accept the glory/beauty/uniqueness that God blessed each of us with. I choose not to conform the hair that He has given me and I am grateful that I came to this understanding. I do not only embrace curly hair. I embrace natural hair for all races. Straight hair, wavy hair, curly hair, kinky hair. Its all beautiful to me because the Lord blessed each of us with a uniqueness. Yes, I do wear makeup, nail polish, and even deodorant (lol). However, I consider these things part of my upkeep. Makeup/nail polish are not permanent. I can easily take this off. Also, I don't wear it everyday. I am just as confident to walk out the house without these things. As for deodorant, that is part of maintaining our cleanliness. That's like saying why do you wear lotion, use soap, oil your skin/hair, etc? Therefore, I do agree with the term natural. It is a simple explanation for our hair.

As for her being natural several times before. Good for her. Maybe one day she will grow to appreciate it.

So...

Am I sadity? Is the natural community sadity??

Maybe some would consider my thought pattern on natural hair sadity. Simply because I prefer natural hair over conformed hair. However, I can just as easily say they are being sadity/snobbish because they prefer relaxed/conformed hair over natural hair. Also, I don't think the natural community is snobbish. It is a wonderful and beautiful thing that we are finally beginning to accept our natural beauty and glory. I don't equate confidence with snobbery.

That concludes my thoughts on that topic. For now...

Hairstyle: Twist Out Front with French Braid Back

So, this weekend I did try a new hairstyle for my hair. Again, the hairstyle that I had in mind did not come to vision. But, I improvised yet again. Through my trusty bobby pins. This is a hairstyle that is 90% protective. There is a small portion of hair left out so this accounts for the 10%. It is getting cold in these parts so, I am trying to protect my hair from the winds.

Here's what I did:
1. Co-washed my hair with Suave Coconut Naturals
2. Deep conditioned with Suave Coconut Naturals
3. I ended up leaving this conditioner in b/c I got on the phone with my sis and the conditioner was thoroughly soaked into my hair by the time I got off the phone. So, I thought why not leave it in??
4. I parted the back section of my hair and french braided it.
5. I applied HE Totally Twisted to the front potion of my hair and proceeded to twist it.
6. The next morning I unraveled the twists.
7. I then pinned up the sides of the twist-out and left a small portion for a bang.
8. And you're done!

Hair Today: Still Braided Up

So, I decided to do a "Hair Today" post to give you an idea of how my hair has been holding up. I put these 4 braids in on Saturday so, they have been in for about a week. I think they held up pretty well even though they are not as fresh as Day 1. Also, the braids in the back are slightly frizzy because I forgot to sleep with my satin bonnet yesterday. (And I sleep on my back).

I will wear this style for one more day and then I will be trying something new with my hair. Right now I am not sure what I will be trying.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. This style is a really easy style. It doesn't take long to put in and all I have to do is cover it for the night then wake up and go. I do enjoy simple hairstyles. They make life easier.

I've gotten a few compliments on my hair this week at work. The most memorable one came from a guest and she said "Your hair is just ADORABLE like that!"

A Staple Item: Satin Bonnet

Oh, the importance of a satin bonnet (or satin scarf)!! I am sure you have heard on many natural blogs or from naturals around you (and even relaxed girls) the importance of their satin bonnet. I wear my satin bonnet every night and even when I am taking a brief nap. I can not imagine my hair rubbing against harsh cotton. I know some naturals choose to sleep on a satin pillow but, I love the cool feel of cotton.

Can you believe that last night I forgot to sleep with my satin bonnet?!?! It just totally slipped my mind. This morning I was so annoyed with myself I kept touching my braids to see if any frizz occured. I did have some. So, I smoothed it down and then bobby pinned those pieces in place that were out. I could have avoided all of this if I would've slept with my bonnet.

So, why is a satin bonnet so important? Simply put, our hair can not take constant rubbing or movement against other fabrics (i.e. cotton, wool, acrylic). This can cause friction which can lead to breakage. And that is something we all wish to avoid. This simple bonnet is a life saver.

The bonnets are not hard to find. They sale them at most pharmacies, department store, and beauty supply stores. And the cost is not ridiculous at all. Also, the boneets come with a wide range of options. You can get a bonnet with a tie string, with ruffly elastic edging, or a smooth stretch edging. The smoothy stretch edging is my favorite, however; I do own the ruffly elastic edging also.

Recently, I started to wear a satin bonnet under my slouchy hats. I make my hats with an acrylic yarn and I have always been nervouse that the acrylic would rub against my hair. So now, I simply put the bonnet on and put my hat over the bonnet. So simple.

Where would I be without my satin bonnet???
