Hair Low: Thinning Patch

This blog was initially made for me to track my natural journey--including the highs and the lows. For this reason, it is time for me to share a disappointing hair update. Hopefully, this will help others out there to learn so that they may avoid this hair mistake.

I have been wearing my headband styles frequently since becoming natural. The method in which I would tie the headband would be so the knot was on top of my head. Because I tied this knot in the same spot frequently it started to thin. I noticed on Thursday of last week that I had a small patch of missing hair. And I knew immediately that this was from tying my headband on that same spot. (My sister even shared that she suffered from hair thinning when she had her locs and would wear a headband everyday).

Initially, I was very down, hurt, ashamed and embarassed. I thought I was taking all the healthy steps, yet I still suffered from hair loss:-( This showed me that this is still a learning experience for me. Needless to say, I immediatly let go of the headband styles and decided to wear my hair freely. I also eliminated braiding my hair every night to avoid any additional pressure in this area. I now loosely twist my hair every other night.

Despite the heartache of this experience, I have learned from it. I have learned that there should be NO continuous pressure on the hair (even if the pressure is light). I also started researching on what naturals should do when they suffer from hair loss. I received great advice from CrownofGlory (youtube) and lovennappiness (youtube). They both suffered from hair loss, but had methods to regrow their hair.

I am now using Grapeseed Oil on my scalp because this oil has been suggested for hair loss. Also, I am taking Nature's Bounty Hair, Skin, and Nails dietary supplement three times a day. This contains 3000 mcg of Biotin, which also helps with hair growth.

I hope that this post has been helpful. It is easy to share the highs of natural hair, but so hard to share the lows. However, by sharing I know that I am helping someone out there.
